Celebrating Christmas Through Art - Art4MyRoom

Celebrating Christmas Through Art

Christmas is celebrated across the world by people from different cultures. Just as you find it celebrated in a big way in Australia, it’s also the holiday season and time for festivities across the pacific islands, Europe, America, and a number of Asian countries too.

Many classrooms in our country have a mix of students from various cultures and for an art teacher that can prove to be the perfect setting to get their students excited about what Christmas actually means and how it’s celebrated in different cultures. It is also linked into the Celebrations topic and can then lend itself to artworks about other multicultural celebrations.

Art encourages use of  colours and shapes, materials, and creativity. It uses various craft mediums and ideas to teach children different perspectives. It enables children to use paints, pencils, crayons, ink, glitter, and more to make their artwork a fun creation.

Art teachers can include a variety of artworks to the classroom in the days leading up to the Christmas holidays. These artworks can also make great gifts to family over the Christmas period.

Creative ideas

Every child is creative in a different way.  It is the role of the art educator to provide kids with ideas, some direction, and materials, and then allow them to explore and create in their own way.

Some different approaches teachers can try including the following:

  • Ask the class to draw what they like most about Christmas and the holidays. Their drawings can be turned into cards they can take home or you can also pin them up on display boards in the classroom, where everyone can admire them.
  •  Have the children make handmade picture frames or pen holders and decorate them with plastic candy-canes or holly made with paper and beads.
  • Children can draw pictures of themselves in a seasonal character, for example, Santa Claus, an elf, a shepherd, an angel or even a reindeer. Children can also create masks of these characters.
